Get Involved!

  • Global PT Day of Service, October 10th
    • Participate in giving back to your community alongside PTs, PTAs, and students across the world! Check in with your program to see what projects you can get involved with or get together with a group of friends to serve. 
    • Visit the PTDOS website for more information and project ideas! Please be mindful of CDC and local health guidlines when serving this year.
  • Join an SLC Work Group!
    • ​Want to get involved with the Student Leadership Committee? Join a work group! We are currently looking for students interested in helping plan and execute service projects and student events. 
    • This opportunity consists of working with students across Oregon under the direction of one or more SLC members to help create events and involement opportunities for students. This could include planning meetings and day-of support at events.
    • If you are interested in joining a work group, please email or connect with any SLC representative today! Be on the lookout for email updates about this new opportunity. 
  • APTA-OR Emerging Student Leader Award
    • This is an opportunity for one first-year PTA student and one second-year DPT student to join the Oregon Delegation and engage with the governence of the PT profession at the state and national levels.

  • Vote in the upcoming Student Assembly Board of Directors elections!
    • ALL APTA student members will be able to vote in this year's SABoD elections! Voting will open October 8th and close Novemeber 7th. Click here to learn more about the candidate slate and voting information.
  • Become a Centennial Scholar!
    • The APTA Student Assembly is sponsoring one current student to be their Centennial Scholar in the 2021 Centennial Scholars program. 
    • This is a year-long opportunity to create a capstone project to help frame the vision of the PT profession for the next century.

Fall is here and this year's events are underway! The SLC is feeling encouraged and optimistic following two successful student events in September. Looking ahead, we are excited about launching a PT month service opportunity (coming soon!), creating student work groups, and planning events for the spring. 

Save the date for a number of upcoming opportunities, including voting in the APTA Student Assembly Board of Directors elections and applying for the APTA-OR Emerging Student Leader Award. As the school year comes to a close, I want to extend a special congratulations to everyone in the Class of 2020! While graduation may look differently than originally anticipated, your accomplishments are commendable and inspiring. I wish you all the best of luck as you enter the physical therapy profession.     • This survey is to help the APTA Student Assembly and the Arizona delegation gain information for a motion at House of Delegates that, if adopted, would promote financial transparency in all CAPTE accredited programs.

  • Payment Win: CMS Reverses Coding Edits
    • APTA and it's members engaged in extensive advocacy efforts to convince CMS to rethink it's decision
    • PTs will be able to return to billing for ther act on the same day as evals. Read more here! 
  • Humana Adopts PTA Coding System
    • Announced they will mirror the CMS rule with a 85% payment differential for therapy services delivered "in whole or in part" by a PTA or OTA.
    • Payment differential to begin in 2022, with code modifiers beginning in 2020.

  • OPTA 2020 Annual Conference - March 14th, 2020

National News:

  • Where Things Stand, What APTA'S Doing: Fee Schedule, SNF and HH rules from CMS
    • This year's standout challenge: advocacy efforts around the CMS proposed physician fee schedule (PFS).
    • The rule as proposed includes at least 2 troubling provisions that demanded a strong response
      • How CMS would go about determining whether therapy services were delivered "in part" by a physical therapist assistant (PTA) or occupational therapy assistant (OTA)
      • Proposes an estimated 8% cut to reimbursement for physical therapists (PTs) and several other professions.
    • APTA continues to advocate for the profession, the association also provides its members with plenty of opportunities to get up-to-speed with both proposed and final rules. Read more about what the APTA is doing and how to get involved here

Welcome back to school and congratulations to all the new 1st years! I hope you all are enjoying your last few days of summer before the leaves start turning.  I hope you all already received an invite to our annual Fall Mixer on the 20th! This is sure to be the best year yet. This is a great opportunity to meet other students from around the state for a day of food and fun!

The APTA National Student Conclave is this Oct 31-Nov 2! It's sure to a spooky event with lots of fun, networking and great speakers. We want to have a good Oregon turn out this year! I'll be attending so feel free to contact me directly if you need assistance with finding flights, roommates or just want a friendly face to hang out with! 

If you are looking for a more local workshop to attend, the OPTAs Fall Workshop is September 28th. Registration is now open and only $35 for student members! We hope to see you there.

  • APTA Legislative Advocacy Activity
    • Legislation to Include PTs in Student Loan Relief Program Introduced
      • The proposed change,  would allow PTs to participate in the National Health Services Corps (NHSC), a federal initiative that provides greater patient access to health care in rural and underserved areas—and incentivizes health care provider participation through a student loan forgiveness program.     • Chicago June 9 - 11 
    • The House of Delegates (House) is an APTA policy-making body comprised of voting chapter delegates, non-voting delegates (the Board of Directors and section, assembly, and PTA Caucus delegates), and consultants.
    • Delegates make decisions on issues that may have far-reaching implications for the association and for the profession of physical therapy. 
    • APTA members can view the open sessions of the House via livestream

    • Atrium at Legacy Emanuel
    • Provides options for adaptive tricycles to children and adults with disabilities in Oregon and Washington
    • Learn more about this organization and sign up here to help build 11 new adaptive tricycles for kiddos!
  • LEAP Adaptive Ballet - August 3rd
    • Volunteer at the Northwest Rett Syndrome Association Conference
    • LEAP Adaptive Ballet is teaching a dance class for all the kids with Rett Syndrome
    • Need volunteers to work with kids from ages 2-39 with varying functional levels from those who are ambulatory, running and in wheelchairs.

  • Muscular Dystrophy Association Supper Camp - July 13-19th
    • MDA Summer camp give kids ages 8-17 the freedom to be kids with others who are just like them - at no cost to their families
    • We need Counselors to be with the kids day and night so they can do all the fun activities the camp offers. 
    • Great opportunity for hands-on experience in education, recreation, family social sciences and medical professions as well as 140-hours volunteer hours!
